Experts believe that the ideal homocysteine level is below 6 units. (Holford, 2004, p.141) It is important to get tested if you have any of the following risk factors (Holford, 2004, p.141)
- Genetic inheritance (family history of heart disease, strokes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia or diabetes),
- Folate intake of less than 900mcg/day
- Increasing age
- Male
- Oestrogen deficiency
- Excessive alcohol
- Caffeine intake
- Smoking
- Lack of exercise
- Hostility and repressed anger
- Inflammatory bowel diseases (celiac, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis)
- H. pylori-generated ulcers
- Pregnancy
- Strict vegetarian or vegan
- High-fat diet, or
- High salt intake.
